Transparent GIFs allow a person to mask a particular color in an image by using the background. Here, the color black gets masked by the white background.

This can be done by using shareware tools, such as L-View and Paint Shop Pro. I encourage registering one of these products, as transparent GIF's are an invaluable resource when designing webpages.
