Animated GIFs allow a person to use motion in their graphics. See the example below.

This can be done by using the shareware tool, GIF Construction. As a general rule, animated
GIFs should be avoided as much as possible. There are many disadvantages of animation, here
are some of the main points:
Files are much larger and harder to transport
Images take much longer to load into a page
Causes heavy server traffic
Most browsers don't allow for the loop function (allows an image to cycle through its
animation sequence a specified number of times.
The Netscape Navigator®(Versions prior to 3.xx) stop button does not work on animated
images. They can cause slow run time for a PC, especially one with a pre-Pentium® chip.
On the other hand animated images can, if used properly, be a useful tool on a page.
