Animated GIFs allow a person to use motion in their graphics. See the example below.

Normal Transparent Animated

This can be done by using the shareware tool, GIF Construction. As a general rule, animated GIFs should be avoided as much as possible. There are many disadvantages of animation, here are some of the main points:

  • Files are much larger and harder to transport
  • Images take much longer to load into a page
  • Causes heavy server traffic
  • Most browsers don't allow for the loop function (allows an image to cycle through its animation sequence a specified number of times.
  • The Netscape Navigator®(Versions prior to 3.xx) stop button does not work on animated images. They can cause slow run time for a PC, especially one with a pre-Pentium® chip.

On the other hand animated images can, if used properly, be a useful tool on a page.
