1957 - President Eisenhower forms ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) in response to Russians Sputnik.
1962 - ARPA tasked with improving military use of computers. John Licklider, from MIT, publishes a memorandum outlining a "Galactic Network", a globally interconnected set of computers to provide access to data and programs from anywhere.
